How to use green screen memes

A green screen meme is a meme clip on a solid green background. Your editor removes the green (this is called chroma keying), so only the meme is left over your footage. Here's how to do it in every popular app.

CapCut (iPhone and Android)

  1. Open your project and tap Overlay → Add overlay, then pick the green screen meme.
  2. With the overlay selected, tap Remove BG → Chroma key.
  3. Drag the color picker onto the green, then raise Intensity until the background disappears. Add a little Shadow to smooth the edges.
  4. Pinch to resize and drag to position the meme.

CapCut desktop

  1. Drag the meme onto a track above your main video.
  2. In the right panel, open Video → Remove BG → Chroma key.
  3. Use the color picker on the green and adjust Strength and Shadow.

Adobe Premiere Pro

  1. Put the meme on V2, above your footage on V1.
  2. In Effects, search for Ultra Key and drag it onto the clip.
  3. In Effect Controls, click the Key Color eyedropper and pick the green. Set the Setting dropdown to Aggressive if edges remain.

DaVinci Resolve

  1. Place the meme on the track above your footage.
  2. Easiest: in the Edit page, add Effects → Delta Keyer or 3D Keyer from the Resolve FX Key category.
  3. Or on the Color page, add an alpha output, then use the 3D Qualifier to select the green and invert the key.

Final Cut Pro

  1. Connect the meme above your primary storyline.
  2. Drag the Keyer effect onto it. Final Cut detects the green automatically.
  3. Fine-tune with Strength and Spill Level.

OBS Studio (streaming)

  1. Add a Media Source and select the meme MP4.
  2. Right-click the source, choose Filters → Effect Filters → + → Chroma Key, and set Key Color Type to Green.
  3. Bind the source to a hotkey to trigger the meme live.

Why is there a green outline around my meme after keying?

That's green spill. Raise the key's edge softness or shadow slightly, or use a Spill Suppression or Despill control. Most editors have one inside the chroma key effect.

Can I use green screen memes on my phone?

Yes. CapCut, VN and KineMaster on iOS and Android all include chroma key. Add the meme as an overlay, then apply Chroma Key.

What's the difference between green screen and greenscreen memes?

Nothing. "Green screen meme", "greenscreen meme" and "meme green screen" all mean a meme clip filmed or edited onto a solid green background so it can be keyed over other footage.
